What is Fioricet?

Fioricet is a a strong, non-narcotic pain reliever and relaxant.

What is it used for?

It is prescribed to relieve tension headache symptoms caused by muscle contractions in the head, neck, and shoulder area.
Tension headeaches is the most-common type of primary headaches (they comprise about 90% of all headaches).

What does it contain?

Fioricet contains the following active ingredients:

How does it work?

The role of each active ingredients in the relief of the complex of symptoms known as tension headache is incompletely understood.

Codeine Phosphate Belongs to a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers.
Acetaminophen It's a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of codeine.
Butalbital It relaxes muscle contractions involved in a tension headache.
Caffeine It relaxes muscle contractions in blood vessels to improve blood flow.

What should you consider before taking Fioricet?

When deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking it must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make.For Fioricet, the following should be considered as well.

Warning

Codeine and Butalbital may be habit-forming. look where for details.

Allergies

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to Butalbital or other Barbiturates, or to Acetaminophen, Aspirin, Caffeine, or Codeine.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

Fioricet is classified by FDA into "Pregnancy Category C". It means that
  • Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with Fioricet.
  • It is also not known whether Fioricet can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity.
  • Fioricet should be given to a pregnant woman only when clearly needed.

Children

Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients (below age of 12) have not been established.

Drug interaction

Butalbital slows the central nervous system (CNS) and intensifies the effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants. Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking Fioricet.
If you take Fioricet with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. For the list of the drugs to be discussed with your doctor before combining Fioricet with any of them, see (section "Food and drugs that may interact with Fioricet").

Other medical conditions

Before using Fioricet, tell your doctor if you have:
  • asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, or other breathing disorders;
  • liver or kidney disease;
  • a history of head injury or brain tumor;
  • low blood pressure;
  • a stomach or intestinal disorder;
  • curvature of the spine;
  • mental illness;
  • a history of drug or alcohol addiction.

How it should be taken?

  • Fioricet should be taken only as directed by your doctor
  • Fioricet will relieve your headache best if you take it as soon as the headache begins
  • Lying down in a quiet, dark room for a while after taking the medicine also helps to relieve headaches

Dosage

Age Group Dose Comment
Adults 1 or 2 capsules or tablets every four hours as needed. Dose selection for an elderly patient (aged 65 and over) should be cautious, usually starting at the low end of the dosing range.
Children Must be determined by your doctor Safety and effectiveness in patients below the age of 12 have not been established.

Abdominal pain, dizziness, drowsiness, intoxicated feeling, light-headedness, nausea, sedation, shortness of breath, vomiting.
